About Kurt Vinion

My name is Kurt Vinion, I am a miltary ‘brat’ who grew up on military bases around the world. I have always loved to travel and never really felt home until I moved back to Prague. I have two wonderful children, who when they reach the age of 18 will be given a tome on photography that is solely about their lives as we experienced it together. It will be a massive book I can assure you, as I have two amazingly beautiful children and watching them grow up is a gift that I will never tire of.

My previous experiences run the gamut of full-time sports photographer in the US, to contributing photographer for Getty Images in Europe, as well as a two-year stint as the Photo Editor of The Prague Post. I have in many ways ‘paid my dues’ by covering international news stories & reportages such as: documenting refugees along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border as well as meeting and having existential conversations with members of the Taliban as we waited for the bombing campaign to begin, living with street kids in Ukraine, dodging missiles and bullets with members of the UFF’s and the UVF in Belfast, N. Ireland and many others. I have also covered many smaller subjects that truly have left an indelible mark on my as well.

Along the way, I have been blessed (if I can use that word) to have met some amazing people: such as the greatest sports legends of all time such as:  Johnny Unitas, Muhammad Ali (and his wonderful wife), Denny Crum (COACH), Michael Jordan, Joe Paterno and many, many more.

I have also met and photographed normal people who enriched me in many untold ways: illegal coal miners in the Ukraine, IMF & World Bank Rioters (some of them at least) in Prague, former sex workers who are rebuilding their lives from both the Czech Republic and the Ukraine, ‘Liquidators’ who put out the radioactive flames in Chernobyl and are living with the consequences of their bravery, and many, many men and woman from the ‘greatest generations’ – like my grandparents. I am truly a richer person by getting to know them. Oh, and I cannot forget the irreplaceable Martina! A beautiful woman who enriches me by simply knowing her.

After traveling to over 60 countries, the one thing I am always impressed by is the kindness of the human spirit – no matter the circumstances. It has been on many occasions truly humbling and in some ways crushing. We rarely realize just how lucky we are in comparison to how the other half live.

Awards: well we photographers are a terribly vain lot, we love to brag about our awards (state fair, blue ribbon anyone?), our accomplishments and books. Though I have won my share of international awards (such as two 1st places in the ‘Best of Photojournalism’) for my news & reportages, my greatest ‘award’ was finding out that children in the Ukraine were adopted by Americans who viewed my reportages on their plight and felt they needed to do something. After accomplishing that, well, there really is no ‘award’ that truly matters!

Though I will always consider myself a reportage photographer, I simply enjoy specializing in lifestyle, portraiture and especially wedding photography. It is with weddings that I finally feel that I can apply not only my reportage skills (and many years of other types of photography) but also my artistic vision to create fine art wedding images that will be cherished for generations. I have reached a point where my photography finally fulfills me professionally – it was a long journey. Though I am still learning and always will.

But it does surprise me, there truly is no better job in the world than to create wedding photography. It is an honor and a privilege and let’s face it – I have a hell of a lot of fun and I hope my work shows!
